Last Monday, the players touched down in a foreign land with many of them making the journey outside of America for the first time. One week on and you would think that they were world travelers (and world athletes for that matter). After the weekend excursions in London and Brighton, the normal schedule resumed with training and games taking precedence.
The players awoke to another sunny morning in England and have started to wonder why this country gets such a bad reputation when it comes to weather. Fun fact, there have been more consistently sunny days during our trip than at any other point in time in England. Just kidding, that isn't an actual fact but it sure is nice to be enjoying such lovely weather.
Once breakfast was finished, the boys and girls soccer players changed into their kit and headed over to the classroom where they participated in a seminar with some of Brighton and Hove Albion's academy and recruitment staff. The players quickly learned what it takes to be a top players as well as how the scouting system works in this country. Players as young a 7 are offered places in the academy and they can quickly go on to signing a contract before they are 18. Brighton is relatively close to London so it was interesting to hear how they compete with the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham and Crystal Palace for players. Once the seminar was finished the kids headed out to the fields. The boys had a game in the afternoon so they worked on some small sided games and technical drills whilst the girls scrimmaged.
In the afternoon, the girl soccer player and the field hockey players had training as the boys rested before their matches against Charlton Ahtletic. Both of the girls sports teams have some big games taking place on Tuesday so there was a lot of emphasis on organization and set up during the session. As the girls were finishing up, the boys were making their way down to the field for the games. Charlton Athletic hails from Southeast London and currently play in the English Football League One division. Although they are positioned lower in the league, it wasn't to long ago they were playing in the Premier League against Manchester United and Arsenal. They are well known for producing good players and the boys knew this would be a big test. All three games kicked off at the same time and the format was four twenty minute quarters. The Charlton players were certainly a talented bunch but our boys competed with them on all fronts. The games ended in a draw and two close losses. One of the Charlton coaches afterwards couldn't say enough positive things about our style of play and more importantly, the way the boys conducted themselves. They already want to play us again before we leave!
In the evening the kids enjoyed some dinner and then they made their way out to the fields once more for a fun game of 'rounders'. The sport is basically and smaller version of baseball with a bat that you use with one hand. All of the players played which was great to see. You really get a sense that all of the kids are coming together and enjoying their time over here.
Welcome to the SUSC Brighton Blog - information will be posted here for players & families traveling to the UK in August 2016!

Day 7 August 7th
It is crazy to think that last Sunday, everyone was finishing up some last minute packing and making sure they had everything ready for their trip. All of the players made their way to Logan airport for the start of this exciting adventure. Fast forward to today and the kids are well on their way to becoming experienced travelers.
Since today was Sunday and there weren't any scheduled activities in the morning, everyone was able to enjoy something that they haven't been able to do thus far, SLEEP IN! The kids enjoyed a 'lie in' and had a late breakfast. Once everyone had a bite to eat, they went back to their dorms to freshen up before hopping onto the bus for their next destination.
Brighton Pier is the famous landmark in Brighton and can be seen sticking out into the English Channel for several hundred yards. Believe it or not, thousands and thousands of people from across the UK flock to Brighton as it is one of the premier holiday spots in the country. The beach is beautiful but slightly different to what we are use to. Instead of sand, there are smooth rocks up and down the shoreline.
The kids had the opportunity to explore the historic downtown as well as the famous pier. To give you an idea of what Brighton Pier is like, think Coney Island but slightly smaller. Amusement park rides, games and even 'candy floss' (cotton candy) stations line up the pier making this a favorite spot for young ones. The pier was officially taken over by Seacoast United and it is safe to say the kids had a cracking day out! Once everyone wore themselves out, we made our way back to Lancing College for a quiet evening knowing that the week coming up would be full of games for both soccer and field hockey.

Day 6 August 6th
London Calling! The famous tune song by the British punk band The Clash always sets the mood when you visit the historic city. There is nothing like London. The history, the buildings, the people, the sights, the sounds. There isn't another city like it on the planet and today the Seacoast United players were lucky enough to experience it first hand.
The kids were woken up promptly at 7:00 am which was a task in itself since we didn't get back from Fulham until midnight! Everyone was excited to explore London so it didn't take much convincing to get everyone over to the cafeteria for a quick breakfast before we made our way to the buses. Two buses with over 70 kids started the journey to Central London. The drive up to the city was great as we weaved our way through various boroughs. The houses and streets are a far cry from the major metropolitan areas the kids are accustomed to but there is no other city that does such an amazing job of integrating the old with the new. Little cobble stone streets are adorned with skyscrapers towering in the sky.
We were all dropped off just before Oxford Street, the busiest shopping district in London, and we were quickly split into smaller groups. Everyone made their way to Niketown which is located near Oxford Circus. The kids were released on the store and had the next hour to try on top of the line training gear and boots. The parents that made their way over to England surprised some of the players which was a great sight. Once the kids all finished, the groups headed off in different directions to see the famous sights.
The girl soccer players headed out and made their way (slowly) to Piccadilly Circus. Of course we came across a Starbucks so we spent a good hour queuing up whilst everyone got a much needed Frappaccuno. The girls eventually arrived at the famous Piccadilly Circus and hopped on an open top bus for a quick tour around London. We saw all of the favorites, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, the London Eye and of course Big Ben. Once the tour was finished, we stopped at a souvenir shop for some British gifts and we were back on the bus.
The boys soccer players enjoyed a tour by foot and were able to get up close to some of the landmarks. The weather today was nothing short of superb and could have easily been the nicest day of the year. A handful of clouds dotted the blue sky and the breeze off of the Thames was well received. The field hockey players were treated to a nice surprise as they hopped into the observation pods on the London Eye. The famous Ferris wheel is fixed along the South Embankment and is just opposite Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. The players had a great view of the whole city and were able to get plenty of pictures. Back down on the ground, it was a quick scramble to the bus and we made our way back to Lancing College with all of the kids feeling just a little bit more cultured.

Day 5 August 5th
The days are flying by for all the young Seacoast players and there was a lot on the plate today. The morning began much the same as the other days, we made our way to the cafeteria and were treated to another Full English. I think the kids are starting to enjoy the thick bacon and fried toast. I know the coaches certainly enjoy it.
Once the was finished, the soccer players and the field hockey players changed into their kit and headed out to the training fields. Light sessions were in store as the players had games later on in the day. The players only trained for an hour and then it was a race to the cafeteria for a quick bite. The boys soccer teams had games at 1:00 pm so they had to be back down at the fields for 12:30 pm. Th boys had their bright yellow kits on and they looked sharp as ever.
Brighton brought down three of their development teams so we knew that the players were going to be in for a tough battle. All three games kicked off simultaneously so it was a scramble to keep track of the scores. The Seacoast teams ended up with a draw and two losses but everyone can agree that they were certainly the better sides when it came to overall play. The boys did a great job of controlling the games and they played some really good 'football'.
The field hockey players had a short to commute for their away game. The U16s drew 2-2 and the U18s won which was a terrific result. The young ladies are certainly holding their own against the teams here and are improving more and more every game. The girls made their way back to Lancing in good spirits and capped the night off with a BBQ outside.
The soccer players all piled onto a bus and made their way to London for the Fulham v Newcastle United match which officially kicked off the English football season. The game was played at Craven Cottage which is the equivalent to Fenway Park in Boston. It is one of the oldest grounds in the country and it has a fantastic setting right up against the River Thames. The players made their way to their seats which were adjacent to the away supporters who were in fine voice. It is safe to say the kids never experienced an atmosphere like they did tonight. The noise from the crowd was amazing and the roof came off the place when Fulham scored the only goal of the game just before half-time. The kids hopped back onto the coached and waved goodbye to 'The Big Smoke' (London) knowing that they would be back early Saturday morning.

Day 4 August 4th
The players and staff woke up to another beautiful morning in England. The sun was shining and the windy conditions has died down which meant we were in for a great day ahead. The players slowly dragged themselves out of bed and headed off to the cafeteria for some breakfast. You could tell the players would have enjoyed a little more time in bed after all of the games they played on Wednesday but CMT certainly want to treat this as a training experience and they have done a great job keeping the kids on schedule.
Once breakfast finished up, the kids quickly changed into their training gear and made their way to the fields. Both the soccer players and the field hockey players enjoyed some light sessions since everyone was moving a little slower today. The coaches didn't want to over exert them because the games are starting to come thick and fast. Morning training done and it was quick dash to the cafeteria. Everyone scarfed down their food and headed back to their dorms to change and get ready for the afternoon trips.
All of the soccer players piled onto a bus and made their way to the American Express Community Stadium (AMEX for short) which is the home of Brighton and Hove Albion FC. The stadium is only a short drive from Lancing College and as you approached it you could see the arches of the stadium. Once we pulled up to the ground, all of the players hurried off the bus and the cameras were quickly flashing away. We split the players into several groups and the BHAFC staff took us around the stadium. The groups went into the director's lounge, the various conference rooms, the press office room, the changing room, the museum and most importantly, the pitch! The stadium is amazing and could easily go toe to toe with some of the best grounds back in America. Once the tour wrapped up, the kids made their way to the club shop were everyone seemed to buy a kit and put their name on the back! Soon we were back on the bus and making our way back to Lancing College.
The field hockey players enjoyed a slightly different excursion today as they all headed out to Arundel Castle. The medieval castle is located in West Sussex which is just under an hour away from the college. The players felt like they had stepped back in time as they toured the ancient ruins which were almost 1,000 years old. The players were able to check out the dungeon and the tour guide painted a picture of what it would have been like to be locked up all those years ago. From its highest point you could see the little village that surrounded the castle and that was the next destination. The players walked around the cobbled streets and went inside little shops and cafes for 'Afternoon Tea' and other bits. Everyone loved the experience and the fact that they were able to see another part of England. Once finished, they hopped on the bus and made their way back to the college for dinner.
After everyone finished dinner they headed off for their evening activities. Tomorrow is another big day as the teams prepare for their games. The soccer players will also head into London for the Fulham v Newcastle United match which will officially kick-off the football season in England.

Day 3 August 3rd
Today's attention was solely focused on the afternoon games and you could tell the kids were up for it. It was an early start once more but everyone had a spring in their step because it was game day.
We were finally treated to a proper 'Full English' which is a traditional breakfast in England. Eggs, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes and toast were on offer. The only thing missing was black pudding but I don't think the kids would have been up for that...
The players returned to their dorm rooms to change into their gear for the morning training session and we are out to the fields and ready to start warming up. The boys and girls soccer players participated in various games but nothing too strenuous as they wanted to be in top shape for the afternoon. Plenty of smiles and good banter meant that the kids were enjoying themselves and not getting to caught up in pre-match nerves.
The field hockey players worked on various systems of play for their evening match to ensure that they were ready for their first international challenge. Field hockey is played at a very high standard in England and the developmental program the country has in place is world renown. The players knew full well that they needed to be prepared for the game later that day.
Once training wrapped up, everyone headed to the cafeteria for lunch. The players enjoyed an English take on fajitas although it wasn't nearly as good as the version we have become accustomed to back in America. It did the job though and the players were fueled and ready for the afternoon games.
The boys soccer teams were up first and they were playing against several of Brighton's academy teams along with a county team comprised of the best players from the area. The boys were split into three teams and each team played a full game. The rainy weather finally subsided and the boys were treated to sunny conditions. The wind was a bit rough which made things tricky at times but we easily had the best day thus far weather wise. All of the boys teams competing well and every match was competitive. This was a good test for the young lads and one of teams ran out comfortable winners. Once the games finished up, all of the Seacoast United players gave USA Nike soccer balls to their opponents as a memento which left big smiles on their faces.
The girls soccer teams were up next and they started on the front foot right away. We split the players into two teams and although they were made up of players from various clubs, they went about playing the right way and it pay dividends, The girls won comfortably against both of the Brighton and Hove Albion academy teams.
Fast forward to the field hockey players who traveled down the road to play their games. The U16s ended up drawing 2-2 against a very competitive county team which was a great result for the players. The U18s went up against a county ladies team and although they lost, the game was very much back and forth which will put the team in good stead.
All of the players will be able to relax tomorrow and recover properly. All in all it was a good day for Seacoast teams who could show that they can handle themselves against international competition.
